Character Education

CHARACTER & COMMUNITY BUILDING

We will continue to instill the values expressed in our Gopher Code. Through our current OUSD and site specific initiatives, students learn to respect themselves, others, and the environment; value differences, interact positively, and be a contributing member of our school community.

Our Gopher Code states:
Take care of yourself, Take care of each other, Take care of our community!

The following are our current and character and community building initiatives.

BUDDY CLASSES

In order to foster a sense of school spirit and community, many upper grade classes select a primary class as buddy class. Activities are planned by the teachers, which often involve the older buddy assisting the younger student in art, science, or creative writing project. It is a program, which promotes understanding between older and younger children and helps enhance self-esteem for both.

CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN

This community outreach program is designed to promote a sense of community and instill the values of giving back and helping others. CHC provides an avenue for Glorietta students, families and staff to help students at a nearby school with fewer resources.

GOPHER GOLD CARDS

Students earn Gopher Gold Cards for “doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” Students who earn 5 cards get their picture taken and posted on the office bulletin board. Students who earn 10 cards need to report their accomplishment to Cheryl McNair, and in turn they will be recognized on the next Gopher Pride Day where they will receive their honorary Gopher Gold Pennant.

PEACEFUL PLAYGROUND

Peaceful Playgrounds is a nationwide program that offers students a variety of stenciled blacktop activities that will transform our primary playground into a vibrant, colorful play area which is intended to maximize students involvement and interaction. With minimal wait time, and prescribed rules and expectations, students, staff and parent volunteers will be trained early on to insure that consistent rules are followed and in turn recess play is positive, productive and enjoyed by all! Peaceful Playground also offers a Conflict Resolution component that teaches students how to solve problems in a peaceful manner.

STUDENT SAFETY PATROL

Selected fifth grade students will provide assistance during morning drop-off. After receiving training, Safety Patrol monitors will be assigned to a weekly AM shift, and will be responsible for greeting and guiding students as they arriving to school.

THINK FIRST

The Think First program is aligned with our instruction of character education that focuses on developing positive character traits in students. Students, grades K-5, participate in small group discussions to learn decision making skills. Students are given specific strategies for problem solving and dealing with empathy and anger. Fourth and fifth grade students are given additional information related to tobacco and alcohol abuse. The program is taught by trained parent docents or classroom teachers. Their instruction is based upon supplemental lessons developed by the publishers of Think First.
